Tu as débuté dans la musique à un jeune âge, quelles étaient tes premières expériences?
J’ai commencé à écrire des histoires et  des  poêmes très jeune. À 13 ans je voulais déjà devenir rappeuse! J’ai grandit sur l’île de Maui à Hawaii, et découvert le rap underground à 16 ans grâce à un ami qui revenait de Californie avec des boîtes remplies de mixtapes. Je suis tout de suite tombée amoureuse de ce que j’écoutais et j'ai commencé par faire du slam en acapella et sur de la musique. Les membres du groupe Streams of Consciousness m’ont encouragée à improviser et ils m'ont aidée a développer mes talents de MC. J’ai ensuite quitté Maui pour traverser les Etats-Unis, et pratiquer le slam sur les scènes ouvertes et dans la rue partout où j’allais. J'ai finalement atteri à Oakland en 2001 ou j’ai rencontré ma partenaire de rime Persia.

C’est avec Persia que tu as créé le groupe Mamaz Project. Comment vous êtes-vous rencontrées?
Persia m’a abordée après un open mic ou j’avais slamé et rappé sur des sons trip hop. Nous avons ensuite commencé à travailler ensemble et elle a complétement changé ma vision de l’écriture et du hip hop, c’est grâce à elle que j’ai réellement pu devenir MC. Nous avons créer le duo Mamaz il y a 7 ans, et à force de perfectionner notre musique, une véritable alchimie s’est créée entre nous. En nous écoutant on a l’impression d’être embrassé sur une joue et de recevoir une claque sur l’autre ! Les Mamaz militent contre les stéréotypes négatifs donnés aux femmes dans le hip hop, en devenant un exemple de talent, d’intelligence, de sex-appeal et de leadership. Nous avons eu l’occasion de partager des scènes avec des artistes comme J-Boogie, Lady Bug Mecca, Zion I, Rashaan Ahmad, DJ Vadim, Yarah Bravo, Conscious Daughters, Hieroglyphics, Mystic Journeymen, KRS One pour en citer quelques-uns. www.myspace.com/mamazhouse

Adrien Sane sera sur scène avec toi pour ta tournée française, peux-tu nous parler de votre collaboration?
Adrien Sane est un jeune homme aux multiples talents, il a composé les musiques du show que je présente en France. Il contribue lui aussi à redéfinir ma vision du hip hop, et c’est un réel honneur de travailler avec lui. On s’est rencontré il y a deux ans lors d’un festival organisé par son collectif à Boulder (Colorado) auquel j’avais participé, et nous nous sommes retrouvés cet été pour lancé de nouvelles collaborations.

Est ce que tu es déjà venue en France, et plus particulièrement à Nantes?
C’est la troisième fois que je viens à Nantes, et c’est comme ma ville d’adoption. J’aime les nantais, la nourriture et la culture hip hop dans cette ville. Je suis venue pour la première fois grâce à mon amie DJ Zuleikha qui a organisé la tournée Natural High tour en 2005, et je suis revenue l’année suivante avec le duo SistaMatic. J’espère continuer à venir à Nantes avec le meilleur du hip hop west coast !

Comment vois-tu ton évolution avec tous les projets auxquels tu as participés?
J’apprécie beaucoup de styles musicaux différents et chaque projet auquel je participe m’inspire à sa manière.Travailler avec des musiciens m’apprend à être spontanée et à improviser, les musiques électroniques m’encouragent à apporter plus d’éléments organiques là ou le son est digital. Les dj’s avec qui je travaille m’emmènent aux racines du hip hop et me font apprécier tous les grands artistes qui m’ont précédé. Avec toutes ces expériences, je suis devenue une super MC ! J’aime poser mes rimes sur différents styles, mélanger les genres et casser les barrières entre les musiques.

Quel est le message que tu aimerais faire passer au public français?
Un message d’unité ! Dire qu’à travers la musique tous les êtres humains peuvent se rassembler. Dire aussi que notre communauté hip hop est internationale et qu’on peut changer beaucoup de choses en étant solidaires.

You got involved into music at a young age, how has it all started?
I had always written poetry and short stories since I could read and write, and at the age of 13, I already wanted to be a rapper. I grew up on Maui Hawaii and I wasn’t really introduce to underground Hip Hop till about 1996 when I met an islander, who came back from Cali with boxes of mixtapes all underground rap. I was 16 at the time and instantly fell in love with what I was hearing. At that time I wrote and performed spoken word accapella and with music but still wasn’t completely ready for the emcee title. I started hanging out with a local group called Streams of Consciousness and they would encourage me to freestyle and to develop my skills. Then I left the island of Maui and travelled across the U.S. for a few summers doing spoken word open mics and engaging in street cyphers wherever I went. I eventually landed in Oakland, CA in 2001 where I met my rhyming partner Persia.
 
You created the Mamaz project with Persia. How did you met with her?
Persia saw me at an open mic doing spoken word and rap over Trip Hop beats, and approached me after my set. Persia and I would write together and she broke down the mathematics of Hip Hop writing to me, therefore fully intergrating me into an emcee. You can definately call her my mentor. After that we started a tag team dynamic duo called Mamaz. Perfecting our craft together as a group for over 7 years, we are in such a comfortable zone that you really feel it when you watch us perform. The chemistry in our songs makes you feel like you’ve been slapped on one side of your face while kissed on the other side. Mamaz takes an active stand against the negative roles assigned to women in Hip Hop, by being a living example of talent, intelligence, sex appeal, and leadership. Mamaz has played on the same stages with such artist as J-Boogie, Lady Bug Mecca, Zion I, Rashaan Ahmad, DJ Vadim, Yarah Bravo, Conscious Daughters, Hieroglyphics, Mystic Journeymen, KRS One just to name a few.

Adrien Sane will be on stage with you in France, can you talk about your collaboration?
Adrien sAne is a young talented man of many skills. He has composed the musical score for the set that I will be playing in France. He is a big part of redifining my Hip Hop sound and it is an honor to have him here with me. We initially met two years ago when I was brought out by his crew to Boulder, Colorado to play a big show that incorporated live, electronic, and Hip Hop music. We've been re-connecting this summer and his move to the SF Bay Area brought us back together for more musical collaborations.

Did you ever come to France and how did you get to come to Nantes?
This is my third time to France and to Nantes. I consider Nantes a home away from home. I love the people, the food, and the Hip Hop culture. I was brought out to France the first two times by my long time friend and DJ Zuleikha. She organized the Natural High Tour through Nantes in 2005, which I was a part of, and then booked me to returned the next year with our duo SistaMatic. I hope to continue coming back to Nantes and bringing the best of West Coast music and Hip Hop with me!

It seems like you’ve been through many musical projects to get where you are. How do you see your evolution?
There are so many different types of music that I like. Every project I am in feeds my soul and creativity in a different way. The live music teaches me how to be spontaneous, freestyle. The electronic music inspires me to bring more soul and organic elements where there is only digital sound. The DJ’s I work with show me my hip hop roots, give me an appreciation for all the greats who have come before me. When you put it all together it evolves me into a super emcee! Allowing me to bring emceeing to different genres and blending and breaking musical boundaries.

What message would you like to spread to the french audience?
I would like to bring the message of unity. That through music all humanity has a common bond. That our Hip Hop community is international and that there is a power to change things for the better with that type of solidarity.

I want all my b-girls and b-boys to be ready to dance! Lets make it the best Soul Clap ever!
